What should you pack for a trip to Thailand?
24 July 2026Packing for a trip to Thailand does not require much, but there are a few things worth keeping in mind. Hopefully, this packing list will make it easier to decide what really needs to come with you – and what you can buy after arriving. It is easy to pack too much for a trip to Thailand. The country has a warm climate all year round, and most things you need during your holiday can be purchased locally, often at lower prices than back home.
This applies especially to clothing. In Bangkok and most tourist areas, there is a wide selection of everything from simple everyday clothes to well-known brands. Therefore, it can be practical to travel with relatively light luggage and add to your wardrobe if needed. You save space in your suitcase and avoid bringing things that may never be used.
Packing list for Thailand – 20 things to bring
1. Passport – The most important thing of all. Make sure your passport is valid for your entire stay and preferably at least six months after arrival, as this is recommended or required by airlines and authorities.
2. Documents and important contact information – Keep digital copies of your passport, flight tickets, booking confirmations, travel insurance details and other important documents on your phone or in the cloud. A paper copy in your suitcase can also be valuable if the originals are lost. Save your bank’s emergency blocking number and other important phone numbers on your phone before departure.
3. Travel insurance – Make sure you have valid insurance coverage and know how to contact your insurance company if something happens.
4. Driving licence – If you plan to rent a car or motorcycle, you need a valid driving licence and, in many cases, an international driving permit.
5. Payment cards and cash – Bring at least two bank cards and keep them in separate places. It is also useful to have a small amount of Thai baht in cash for taxis, food or other small purchases immediately after arrival.
6. Mobile phone, charger and power bank – Your phone now works as a camera, map, travel guide, ticket holder and communication tool. Do not forget the charger, and consider bringing a power bank so the battery lasts during longer excursions.
7. Travel adapter – Thailand uses 220–230 V electricity (50 Hz). While many modern hotels accept a variety of plug types, carrying a universal travel adapter is recommended, especially if you plan to stay in older accommodations or travel outside the main tourist areas.
8. Clothing – Pack only the essentials, such as a few T-shirts, shorts, underwear and swimwear. Consider adding a pair of long trousers, a thin long-sleeved shirt and a lightweight rain jacket or poncho. These can be useful when visiting temples, during cooler evenings, in rain showers or as protection from the sun and mosquitoes. Laundry services are available almost everywhere in Thailand, and clothes are inexpensive to buy locally.
9. Comfortable shoes or sandals – Sandals work well for everyday use, while a pair of comfortable walking shoes is recommended for longer excursions or hikes.
10. Book or e-reader – Perfect for the flight, the beach or relaxing on the balcony after a day of exploring. Many people still prefer a traditional book, while others choose an e-reader with several titles stored in one place.
11. Toiletries – Bring the essentials for the first few days, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. Toiletries are of course also available to buy in Thailand.
12. Contact lenses and lens solution – If you wear contact lenses, it may be easiest to bring enough supplies for the entire trip.
13. Sun protection (sunglasses, cap and sunscreen) – Sunglasses and a cap protect against the strong sun and make hot days more comfortable. The sun in Thailand is strong even on cloudy days. Bring a sunscreen that you are comfortable using, and do not forget lip balm with sun protection.
14. Personal medication – Bring enough medication for your entire stay and preferably a few extra days in case your return journey is delayed. Also check well in advance whether any of your medicines are subject to Thailand’s special import regulations. This applies, among others, to certain ADHD medications, strong painkillers and other medicines classified as narcotics or psychotropic substances. In some cases, these may require a special import permit.
✪ Tip: Always check whether your prescription medicines are subject to Thailand’s import regulations before travelling. Current information and any applications for import permits are available from the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA).
15. Small travel first-aid kit – Painkillers, plasters, electrolyte replacement, hand sanitiser and mosquito repellent are useful to keep close at hand, especially during the first few days.
16. Headphones – Make flights, bus journeys and train rides much more enjoyable and are also useful when relaxing at your hotel.
17. Camera – If photography is an important hobby, a DSLR or compact camera can produce better photos than a mobile phone. Remember extra memory cards, batteries and chargers.
18. Power strip – A small power strip makes it easy to charge several devices at the same time, even if your hotel room has only a few electrical outlets.
19. Small backpack and water bottle – A small backpack is perfect for day trips. Consider bringing a reusable water bottle as well, so you can easily stay hydrated throughout the day.
20. Zip bags and laundry bag – A waterproof bag or a few zip bags protect your phone, passport and electronics from rain and boat trips. A laundry bag also makes it easier to keep dirty and clean clothes separate during your journey.
Pack smart – not heavy
A well-planned packing strategy makes your trip both easier and more comfortable. At the same time, there is no need to worry if you forget something at home – most things can be bought in Thailand, often at reasonable prices.
